about

In online discussions (why am I still doing it?) I usually defend every woman's right to wear the hijab or other headscarves. Yet for myself I think it's terrible that women still have to put up with that medieval bulls___ in 2017. Women have to hide themselves so men don't get tempted to break some unrealistic chastity ideals. By the way, regarding nuns or orthodox women, the logic is the same in other religions, too: The female body is impure so it needs to be veiled to live a decent life, agreeable to God.
I've read many horrible stories of how women get treated in Islamic countries and that inspired me to this song, especially since this oppression happens again in the name of religion. And we are talking about a religion where the inferior position of women is fixed in the scriptures. I know well it's not all black and white and also know the testimonials of women who wear it by choice and "feel freer" behind their veil (and like not to be judged by their outside looks).
So I don't want to fall into the pitfall of "white man wanting to save dark skinned women from dark skinned men" and tell anybody what to wear or not. That is clearly not up to me and shouldn't be to anybody. Still it is 2017 and a vast part of the world still parties like it’s the 7th century, treating women as inferior, and for an atheist, that is somewhat disturbing.

lyrics

You are a servant
nothing more
You’re here to please
us as we please
God told you to

You do belong to
the man we choose
From your wedding day
you must obey
God told you to

So you stay covered
or you’re unprotected game
you stay covered
or die in shame

You shall be silent
stay at home
Your body’s sin
so pack it in
God wants you to

So you stay covered
and you always behave well
you stay covered
or you’ll burn in hell
