about

I have been blessed to never experience depression firsthand. Yet I have learned a bit about it during my studies, and when the prompt "low" came up in the Song Skirmish group, this song appeared out of nowhere. It's my attempt to illustrate other people's illustration of depression. And I had to make a production out of it because I heard the string arrangement and the beats in my mind.

I have spent waaaaaaayyyyy too much time on it. Especially on what you don't hear: my fruitless attempts to create a Shepard tone in my DAW. This is an acoustical illusion of an ever rising or falling tone, though it is actually a loop. In the end I just used a so called Shepard-Risset glissando from Wikipedia.

lyrics

At the bottom of a bottomless pit (low low low)
In a tunnel with no end to it (low low low)
A weight that pulls you down (low low low)
that nails you to the ground (low low low)

Still I try the best I can
to ever make it out that hole again

Slowly sinking to the bottom of the sea
The greyest grey times infinity
Black wave washes me away
All lifeguards gone astray

Still I try the best I can
to ever make it out that hole again

I put my pants on just like the rest of you -- one leg at a time. Except, once my pants are on, I make songs that no one cares about.
