about

The lyrics are a listing of religious symbols and acts, which, stripped from their mythical significations, seem pretty random. So on the Jewish cemetery in front of my house I have to cover my head while in the protestant church I have to take my cap off. (I think one way or the other God wouldn't care too much. And why would he deprive of my hair anyway? Fucker.)

Why all this? The big monotheistic religions are all oriented towards an afterlife in eternity. So they follow an arbitrary set of rules in order to spend that in a better or ideal place. The thought that with dying your life could just be over, out, finito, basta, seems to be too much to take for us humans, so we live life like it's just a test.

Many thanks to Pete Murphy for the smoking guitar solo! Check out his incredible output here: petemurphy.bandcamp.com

lyrics

Gatherings on Sundays
in gigantomaniac halls
calling out in stories, songs and poems
Bearing the insignia
wear your faith upon your sleeve
Cover up yourself
Take your hat off

„Thou shalt do this
but not that
To please the lord above“

Seven burning candles
and a man in purple robes
Carpets to the east and
strict fasting for a month
Feast on wine and wafers
Superstitious rituals
They won’t do nothing about the fact that
you’re gonna die

You must pay indulgence
for your sinful deeds and thought
your karma balance has been overdrawn

Avoid forbidden fruit
keep your hands on your duvet
relationships must be approved by the church

Here’s the rules
that we play by
Though we don’t know the game

Seven burning candles
and a man who’s never wrong
muttering ancient verses
firing shots into the dark
Write your resumé in
superstitious rituals
They won’t do nothing about the fact that
you’re gonna die

I put my pants on just like the rest of you -- one leg at a time. Except, once my pants are on, I make songs that no one cares about.
